The Royal Swedish Academy of Science (KVA) and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) collaborate in the support for and promotion of scientific exchange between Sweden and Japan. SLU, Lund University and Umeå Plant Science Center (UPSC) have got the honor to invite a distinguished Japanese scientist through a grant from JSPS in collaboration with KVA during 2024. We are thus very pleased to welcome Professor Kazuhiro Sato to present lectures in Lund/Alnarp and Umeå and discuss further collaboration in the area of plant molecular genetics and breeding. He is professor in genetics and plant breeding at the Institute of Plant Science and Resources, Okayama University.

Prof. Sato has the unique combination of being a leading scientist in plant molecular genetics with the task of a practical breeder and he has developed new technology in barley breeding. He has been the Japanese representative in an international consortium for sequencing the barley genome and he has in particular identified important genes in barley such as key genes for domestication, a gene for adaptation to humid regions, genes for tolerance to soil acidity and high cadmium content. In recent years prof. Sato has been a driving force in Japan for introduction and application of transformation and genome editing in cereals. He has served as the project implementer for the National Bioresources Project in Japan with the management of 20 000 barley accessions, many of them being unique.
